Media: Innovation accelerator Eindhoven Engine enters new phase

As a society, we face numerous challenges. At Eindhoven Engine, a collaborative program between companies, knowledge institutions, social organizations and citizens in the Brainport region, work has been going on for years on innovations to address these problems. Now the program is breaking new ground.

Project NEUROTREND

NEUROTREND (Neurological MRI-based biomarkers for treatment navigation in depression) is a study aimed at improving the selection of the right treatment strategy for depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a common mental illness characterized by at least two weeks of abnormal gloominess often associated with, among other things, loss of interest and inability to enjoy something. MDD can lead to reduced quality of life and is associated with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality.

The primary goal of the NEUROTREND study is to use brain scans to predict the course of a depression. We also want to better understand why some people respond to treatment for depression while for others the same treatment does not help. We will do this by identifying so-called MRI-based biomarkers. These MRI-based biomarkers are physiological changes or findings in the brain that we can observe by means of MRI scans and at the same time are an indicator of the state of depression. Examples of physiological changes or findings in the brain are the volume, activity and connections of and between different parts of the brain. In addition to the scans, the severity of the depression is also measured periodically so that we can determine the effectiveness of the treatment. By combining the MRI-based biomarkers and treatment effectiveness, we hope to be able to make predictions before a treatment is started.

Last year, the Eindhoven Engine had its first open call for innovation projects, a follow-up to the PilotCall 2018 (through which the Eindhoven Engine was founded). OpenCall 2019 resulted in four new innovation projects within the Eindhoven Engine.

Recently, we have begun to prepare for OpenCall 2020, which is expected in the first half of this year. More specifically, the plan is to open the call before March with a submission deadline of early June, allowing the selected projects to start in July. In this new OpenCall 2020, we want to address the lessons learned from the first OpenCall and are considering ways to allow for better SME participation in the Engine’s innovation projects. More details to follow later. In the meantime keep updated via Twitter and/or LinkedIn.

The added value of cross-fertilization between industry, science and students: that is where Katja Pahnke and
Maarten Steinbuch strongly believe in. In fact, they want to accelerate innovation of our Brainport region with
this unique combination in this region. Read more…

The Eindhoven Engine News – October 2019 is out now. The focus of this edition is the results of OpenCall 2019.

Before the submission deadline of the OpenCall 2019, Eindhoven Engine has received seven project proposals. Together they represent an R&D effort of more than 18 M€ and have applied for about 2.4 M€ support by means of RegioDeal funding. As published in the call, as much as 2.0 M€ RegioDeal funding has been made available for this call (with a maximum of 500 k€ per project). Read more…
